Embedded in the Sand is an abstract photography series by Dan Gazit, created Embedded in the Sand is an abstract photography series by Dan Gazit, created using a layer of sand spread across a custom-built light table. Through a process of carving, pressing, and shifting the material, the artist generates traces that are both physical and ephemeral.
Light interacts with the sand in varying ways—thin areas glow, thicker regions darken as well as bare patches , to reveal sharp contrasts. Thease interactions produce complex visual fields that oscillate between natural formations and constructed compositions.
The resulting images exist between drawing and photography, between gesture and structure. They evoke archaeological maps, organic patterns, and systems of visual notation, while remaining grounded in a direct physical process.
The series explores memory, impression, and the relationship between light and material, positioning photography as a means of revealing traces embedded within matter itself.
